What Monarch Sod carries

Our three sod varieties explained

Each grass type we carry is suited to different conditions, maintenance levels, and uses. Here’s what to know about each one before you order.

Kentucky Bluegrass

Best for
Classic, lush lawns in Utah’s full-sun yards

Kentucky Bluegrass is a popular choice for Utah lawns because it offers a full, green look and a soft feel underfoot. It’s a good fit for families and high-traffic yards, and it holds up well through the growing season while filling in nicely over time.

Strengths

  • Dense, soft feel underfoot
  • Excellent winter hardiness
  • Strong self-repair ability
  • Performs well in the spring and fall

Considerations

  • Needs consistent watering
  • Can show heat stress during Utah’s hottest afternoons if under-watered

Tall Fescue (Rhizomatous)

Best for
Families, pets, high-use yards, and shaded areas

Tall Fescue is a versatile choice for Utah lawns. It handles shade, foot traffic, and drier conditions well, which makes it a good option for homeowners who want a durable lawn with lower water needs and less upkeep.

Strengths

  • Best shade tolerance of the three
  • Low-to-medium water needs
  • High foot traffic durability
  • Most consistent year-round color in Utah

Considerations

  • Slightly coarser texture than Kentucky Bluegrass
  • Not as fine-bladed as Bermuda

Bermuda Grass

Best for
Hot, sunny areas and high-traffic yards

Bermuda thrives in full sun and handles heat and heavy use better than any other grass we carry. It’s a good fit for high-traffic residential yards, sports areas, or Utah properties with hot afternoon exposure.

Strengths

  • Highest foot traffic tolerance
  • Low water needs once established
  • Aggressive self-repair and spread
  • Fine, dense texture for an athletic field look

Considerations

  • Needs full sun
  • Goes dormant and brown in winter
  • Not suited for shaded Utah yards

Why Utah homeowners and contractors choose Monarch Sod

Common questions about sod in Utah

What type of sod works best in Utah?
It depends on your yard and how you use it. Kentucky Bluegrass is a popular choice for Utah homes because it looks full and feels soft. Tall Fescue is a versatile option that handles shade, traffic, and drier conditions well. Bermuda is usually best for sunny, high-traffic areas. See the comparison chart above for a side-by-side look.
Both work well in Utah. Kentucky Bluegrass has the softer, more classic look and performs best in full-sun yards with consistent watering. Tall Fescue is the better choice if you have shade, pets, heavy foot traffic, or want to spend less time watering. It holds up better across a wider range of Utah’s climate conditions.
Bermuda grass goes dormant in colder weather, turning brown for part of the year and greening back up when temperatures warm. In Utah, it can be a good fit in warmer areas, especially if you’re comfortable with that seasonal color change.
Measure your lawn area in square feet and add 5–10% for cuts around edges, corners, and obstacles. Our How to Measure page walks you through both the hand-measuring method and the Google Maps method.
Spring and early fall give you the most reliable conditions for sod installation in Utah. Cooler soil temperatures help the sod root faster. Summer installs can work with consistent watering, but the heat makes moisture management more critical.
Both. You can order delivery only and handle installation yourself, or we can deliver and install for you. Our crew handles soil prep, layout, and cleanup. See the service options section above for full details.
We recommend reaching out when you’re ready to get on the schedule. Call, text, or fill out the quote form to get started.
Most sod establishes well with consistent watering, especially during the first couple of weeks. That early care makes a big difference in how well it roots, and we help make sure you know what to do after installation.

Don’t look anywhere else, trust me! Such a great company. Great prices, great people, & they do a quality job. They installed our sod for us and did it SO fast and our grass is looking amazing. We actually had a minor sprinkler issue (which was not their fault) and I called Monarch Sod and Josh came to help me out. He went above & beyond for us and we are so happy!!! We will definitely use again in future homes and we will always refer people to this company!

I've been calling around trying to get sod for a couple days. Monarch was the only one that seemed to be interested in my business. Some dealers were out 2 to 3 months and had voice messages stating they were no longer taking orders. But Monarch came through for me. Within a week, they delivered and installed 4300 Sqft of Sod. Top notch service and installation! I highly recommend Monarch.

The owner went out of his way to get me what I needed fast. It was a curveball of an order, but when the availability came he helped me get what I needed. He took the effort and time to deliver it all the way to my back yard where I needed it (note: my driveway runs all the way to my back yard). He gave me tips on how to best get the sod installed and maintain it. I looked at half a dozen sod distributers and I am glad I went with Monarch Sod.
